A Lifeless Vivacity
Many know I frequent the state park around these parts…Well during the vacation I visited there almost everyday, and today was one of the most surrealistic times which hopefully can be recounted, to some extent, now. Unlike so commonly occurring at this time of year setting foot into the depths of the forest did not illicit the painful, cutting sensation of wind ripping through clothes, but instead was completely absent. Normally as the trees tower the expanse of trees issue shadows over the ground, but today the world was lit by a faint glow, everything visible, but nothing distinct. The myriad of colors associated with a forest were mute and grey, while the air stood stagnant and warm. Standing alone in the midst of all the trees and shrubs the feeling of nothingness swept through the body as. All was so still a single minute paw moving amongst the leaves would have been a thunderbolt exploding in the sky. As the path continues the ground was soft from previous rain so no sound was made through the endless footfalls throughout the hike. After stepping through this nothingness for what seemed forever the end of the path arrived suddenly leaving no farther to venture…Just some large roots and a river, flowing swiftly, but still smooth as ice. After some time taking the only alternative path from this place of repose…a slight sound rings out to break the silence…Where once no shadow existed had become a world of shadow. The muted colors became dark and the path blackened from the previous rains. Another sound in the silence, a tiny clatter rings out amongst the browned leaves. All at once the silence ended as the world was bombarded by silent noise, each tiny clatter and ring adding together to form a deafening roar amongst the trees. As the path continued it became impossible to think with the endless sound enveloping all around, growing constantly louder, then suddenly amongst the shadows…silence.
